Alonso not surprised by Q1 exit

Fernando Alonso admitted he was not surprised after going out in the first segment in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Spanish driver, in his final race with the Renault team, qualified down in 16th position, going out in Q1 for the first time in his career.

Alonso conceded that, given Renault's pace since the start of the weekend, his result was not a surprise at all.

"Totally expected. We are at the back, we have been very slow all weekend so we were out in Q1 deservedly," Alonso told Spanish television.

The two-time champion, who will drive for Ferrari next season, played down the significance of his early exit despite being his last race at Renault.

"The team knows that I've given 100 per cent the seven years that I have been here," he added.

"We know that we probably have the worst car of the grid and we are doing everything we can, both me and Grosjean. But that's the way it is.

"It's the final race so let's hope to complete all the laps and cross the finish line. Logically reaching the points is almost impossible but we will try to put on a fight."
