Schumi: Vettel can still win title

Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher is rooting for Sebastian Vettel to win this year’s title, and insists his German countryman still has a genuine chance despite his 16-point deficit to Jenson Button.

Vettel would have to net a victory and a runner-up finish from the remaining two races to overhaul Button, even if the Brawn driver fails to score at either event – while Button only needs four points to eliminate Vettel from contention no matter what the youngster does.

Notwithstanding that arithmetic, Schumacher reckons anything can happen and Vettel might yet pull off a big upset.

“I think it helps to think of a fact which I was always sticking to during my career: It is not over until it is over; you have to fight until the end,” Schumacher told his website.

“At Ferrari we had that experience very successfully over many years, and I am convinced it will be like this again this time.

“Sebastian as well will probably share this view because he still has the chance to win the title.

“This alone is already a big success.

“I am sure he will make everything possible to show a good performance in the next two races.

“Mathematically everything is still possible, and I will keep my fingers crossed for him.”

Schumacher added that naturally he hoped Ferrari would stay ahead of McLaren in the battle for third place in the constructors’ championship.

The Maranello squad currently leads its perennial rival by just two points.

“This F1 season has turned out to be extremely attractive again, and like probably all motorsport fans I am looking forward to seeing what will happen in the last two races,” said Schumacher.

“Both championships are still open, and for me it is obviously important to see how the constructors’ championship will end – of course I hope our guys can defend their third position.”
