Hartley and Ricciardo named Red Bull reserves

Red Bull and sister team Toro Rosso are to have an all-Australasian reserve line-up this season after it was announced New Zealand’s Brendon Hartley and Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo will occupy their subs’ bench. Ricciardo and Hartley, who are both members of the Red Bull Junior team, will alternate reserve driver duties on a race-by-race basis.

Ricciardo is the reigning British Formula Three champion. A native of Perth, the 20 year-old moved to Europe in 2007 to compete in the Italian Formula Renault series. In 2008 he switched to the Formula Renault West European cup, winning the title after taking eight victories. He competed in the British F3 series in 2009, where he wrapped up the championship with two races to spare.

Hartley, meanwhile, hails from New Zealand’s Palmerston North. After impressing in his home country, the 20 year-old moved to Europe and in 2006 raced in Formula Renault 2.0. In 2007 he won the Eurocup title with a round in hand, before he switched to British F3 in 2008. Last year he raced in the Formula Three Euroseries.

Both drivers took part in the young driver test at the Spanish circuit of Jerez in December 2009. Hartley was in action for Toro Rosso, whilst Ricciardo was behind the wheel of Red Bull’s RB5.

Ricciardo thrilled to end test on top

Daniel Ricciardo was grinning from ear to ear after setting easily the fastest time of the three-day young driver test at Jerez.

The 20-year-old Australian was the only driver at the test to enjoy three full days of running, having sole use of Red Bull’s RB5 – and took full advantage to end the session with a flourish.

Ricciardo’s lap time of 1m17.418s was a massive 1.3s faster than anyone else managed during the three days, and was the quickest time recorded at Jerez this year.

“These last three days have been an incredible experience for me,” he said.

“I would like to thank Red Bull for giving me this great opportunity, which has made me even more determined to make it into Formula 1 one day.

“I know it was just a test, but seeing my name on the top of today’s timesheet was really something special.”

Ricciardo, the current British Formula 3 champion, will contest the Formula Renault 3.5 series next year and is hoping to secure a reserve driver position at RBR.

Ricciardo ends Jerez test on top

Daniel Ricciardo ended Formula 1's young driver test at Jerez in scintillating form as the Red Bull driver recorded the fastest time of the week to sit on top of the timesheets.

The Australian completed 77 laps of the Spanish circuit and set the pace in a time of 1m17.418s.

It was not all plain sailing for the British F3 champion though, as his day's work was ended early when a large plume of smoke appeared from the back of his car and he stopped at the exit of the chicane, bringing the session to a halt.

Britain's Paul di Resta continued his impressive week of testing with the second quickest time for Force India. He also had his problems during his half-day of running.

A spin into the gravel at the chicane early in the afternoon brought the red flags out, as did an incident 90 minutes later when his car cut out at the same point while the DTM driver was on an out-lap.

Wednesday pace-setter Gary Paffett and Mike Conway were third and fourth quickest for McLaren and Brawn respectively. Both had half a day behind the wheel.

Nico Hulkenberg's Williams and Bertrand Baguette's Sauber were behind them, the Belgian driver improving his best time on a number of occasions in the final hour.

Brit Oliver Turvey was an impressive third quickest in the morning running with McLaren, but was pushed down the order to seventh by the end of the day as conditions improved.

Brawn's Marcus Ericsson, Renault's Lucas di Grassi and Force India's JR Hildebrand completed the top 10, although the American's two runs on his best sets of tyres were spoiled by issues with the car's electronics.

Ferrari gave maiden runs to the top three finishers in this year's Italian F3 Championship. Mexican Pablo Sanchez, the last to venture onto the circuit, was the fastest of them in 11th place. The first out, Daniel Zampieri, was also the first to bring out the red flags as he spun into the gravel at the chicane early on.

Toro Rosso made a late decision to allow Mirko Bortolotti to drive in the morning before he handed the car over to Brendon Hartley.

Ricciardo storms into the lead

Daniel Ricciardo set the pace for Red Bull Racing midway through the final day of the young driver test at Jerez.

Chilly conditions with a track temperature of just 14'C greeted the young drivers at the start of the final day of the three-day test.

The test, which is only open to drivers with two or fewer grands prix starts to their name, saw Daniel Ricciardo led the way at midday, clocking a 1:7.418.The Red Bull tester's time was blindingly quickly compared to second placed Nico Hulkenberg as he was 1.7s up on the Williams driver's best time.

Oliver Turvey, who is testing for McLaren, claimed third place, just 0.132s further back while Mike Conway was fourth quickest in the Championship-winning Brawn GP001.

JR Hildebrand took his turn in the Force India, finishing fifth ahead of Renault's Lucas di Grassi. Di Grassi is hoping this week's young driver test could earn him a Renault race-seat for next year's Championship or drive with one of new F1 teams.

Bertrard Baguette, who was called up by Sauber for the final day despite earlier in the week testing for Renault, was seventh quickest ahead of Marco Zipoli.

Zipoli, one of three drivers in action for Ferrari, brought out the first red flag of the session late in the morning. The F3 racer lost control at the Ayrton Senna chicane, leaving the track and coming to a stop heading into Turn 12. Fortunately, though, he managed to avoid damaging the F60.

Marshals were quickly out on track to help the stricken Zipoli, who was eighth at the time of his incident, with the session resuming some 15 minutes later.

Mirko Bortolotti completed the timesheets for Toro Rosso.
