Ricciardo storms into the lead

Daniel Ricciardo set the pace for Red Bull Racing midway through the final day of the young driver test at Jerez.

Chilly conditions with a track temperature of just 14'C greeted the young drivers at the start of the final day of the three-day test.

The test, which is only open to drivers with two or fewer grands prix starts to their name, saw Daniel Ricciardo led the way at midday, clocking a 1:7.418.The Red Bull tester's time was blindingly quickly compared to second placed Nico Hulkenberg as he was 1.7s up on the Williams driver's best time.

Oliver Turvey, who is testing for McLaren, claimed third place, just 0.132s further back while Mike Conway was fourth quickest in the Championship-winning Brawn GP001.

JR Hildebrand took his turn in the Force India, finishing fifth ahead of Renault's Lucas di Grassi. Di Grassi is hoping this week's young driver test could earn him a Renault race-seat for next year's Championship or drive with one of new F1 teams.

Bertrard Baguette, who was called up by Sauber for the final day despite earlier in the week testing for Renault, was seventh quickest ahead of Marco Zipoli.

Zipoli, one of three drivers in action for Ferrari, brought out the first red flag of the session late in the morning. The F3 racer lost control at the Ayrton Senna chicane, leaving the track and coming to a stop heading into Turn 12. Fortunately, though, he managed to avoid damaging the F60.

Marshals were quickly out on track to help the stricken Zipoli, who was eighth at the time of his incident, with the session resuming some 15 minutes later.

Mirko Bortolotti completed the timesheets for Toro Rosso.
